Today, on Africa Freedom Day we celebrate all of Zambia’s female freedom fighters: Mama Betty Kaunda, Mama Yolanta Chona, Mama Salome Kapwepwe, Mama Chibesa Kankasa, Mama Mary Fulano, Mama Lilly Monze, Mama Eunice Sebele, Mama Julia Chikamoneka, and others too numerous to mention.
These gallant women held the fort when their husbands were arrested and detained during the liberation struggle. They housed nationalist leaders, raised funds for the liberation movement and organised civil events all over the country. They delivered food to the secret hide-outs. They sacrificed their lives and marriages and were detained for inciting civil disobedience as they would not disclose the whereabouts of the men.
We recognise and celebrate your sacrifice and determination to liberate Mother Zambia. Dzikomo kwambili.
