Voting in the highly anticipated UPND General Assembly is currently underway in the 10 provincial centres across the country.
President Hakainde Hichilema, an unopposed presidential candidate in the UPND intraparty vote, was on hand to cast his ballot shortly after the commencement of voting at the UPND secretariat at 15:40 this afternoon.
The voting is being monitored by independent electoral monitors from the civil society.
The event is being held under strict adherence
to Ministry of Health (MoH) Covid-19 guidelines such as social distancing, handwashing, and sanitizing.
The GA is also being held via electronic links as part of its Covid-19 Ministry of Health (MoH) guidelines.
Of the more than 53 registered political parties in Zambia, the UPND becomes the first to successfully conduct an elective general conference and the first to fulfill Article 60 of the Zambian Constitution which requires all political parties in Zambia to hold intraparty elections.
2, 915 studded delegations of voters are expected to elect 76 members to the NMC, the highest decision making organ of the party, according to the newly amended party Constitution.
