The incident which took place in Chingola on Sunday, where the police fired shots and teargas at the convoy of UPND President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, is a sign of desperation by a government that is out of lack, time and support at the hands of the Zambian people.
We wish to state in no uncertain terms, that such acts of unprovoked aggression against citizens will not deter the collective resolve of Zambians to change government in August.
We are urging the police to remain professional and desist from carrying out illegal orders which are injuring the integrity of Zambia’s democracy and perilously threatening to throw the August polls into chaos.
Furthermore, with and while parliament stands dissolved, Mr. Edgar Lungu, sitting as head of all government activities including law and order, must take full responsibility for the calculated terror and intimidation citizens are suffering under a police service working under very difficult conditions.
We continue to note, that the PF have continued to enjoy uninterrupted conduct of political party activities including rallies and road shows as has been seen and noted in Kanchibiya, Kabushi, Kamfisa, Kanyama and many other jurisdictions across the country.
We urge the police to tone down on the use of illegal force against citizens in the course of exercising constitutional liberties.
We are also urging citizens to stand firm and resolutely resist the use of unconstitutional tactics and force by the police, and ensure that we see this people’s election project across the line in August.
