*…as Church rejects Lungu’s unconstitutional bid to go for Third Term*
The Church in Zambia has categorically made it clear that it does not support President Edgar Lungu’s bid for third term of Presidential office.
According to the Church, President Lungu, who has been elected as Republican President on two occassions, 2015 and 2016, respectively, would be abrogating the Constitution if he used the power of incumbency to force himself on the 2021 presidential ballot.
Pastor Kelly Mukonka, who heads the UPND Religious Affairs Committee, told journalists yesterday that Lungu’s time had come to a constitutional end.
“Wasn’t Edgar Lungu sworn in as Republican President in 2015 by the Chief Justice? He was! And in 2016, wasn’t he [again] sworn-in as Republican President? Therefore, our position as clergy…we are saying, No third term! No third term! No third term! We don’t want to go against our Constitution” charged Pastor Mukonka.
And, UPND National Chairman, Rev. Mutale Nalumango urged Mr Lungu to hang up his gloves and allow for constitutionalism to take centre stage in the governance system of the country.
She stated that Mr Lungu, whose time at the helm of the country’s leadership had expired after being elected twice, must not force himself to go for a third term.
“For us, we believe that Zambians’ eyes are open. And clearly, as my brother here [Mukonka] has said, President Lungu’s time is over. By the Constitution; their time is over,” she said.
She also appealed to Mr Lungu to take a leaf from history and learn from the conquering prowess of Greek’s infallible leader, Alexander the Great, who never lost a battle but failed to live on as a dictator.
She said that Mr Lungu, who had assumed the “immortal” status and undoubtedly under the illusion of the corruption that comes with power, should be reminded that his end will come like that of other fallen leaders who carried nothing with them to the grave.
“After conquering many kingdoms, Alexander the Great sat on his death bed and make a wish to have his hands kept dangling outside his casket… There is a very big lesson from Alexander the Great for all of us and Lungu’s (third) wish, especially those in power who think that they were born with the government portfolio they hold now. They came into office empty handed and there is no need to hold on when time is up,” she said.
