United Party for National Development (UPND) National Youth Secretary, Trevor Mwiinde has taken a swipe at assertions by Patriotic Front (PF) Southern Province chairperson, Lawrence Evans that the UPND would have to wait for 2031 or 2041 before they formed government.
In an exclusive interview this morning, Mr Mwiinde stated that the scathing attacks on the UPND and its leadership by Mr Evans were an assault to the growth of Zambia’s young democracy.
He stated that such unpalatable utterances are not supposed to be given a front roll seat in democracy has it had the potential to mislead and misguide the masses, who he said were yearning for regime change.
Mr Mwiinde stated that it was not for the PF to determine when regime change should come, but that it regime change was a sole preserve of the Zambian people, whom he said were calling for change due to the high poverty levels and misery in the country.
‘’We want to state that Mr Evans’ words are misplaced in the sense that it is not the UPND who want change but the Zambian people are the ones who are looking for change of the governance system because the governance system has collapsed,” charged Mwiinde.
He charged that it was fallacy for the PF to start hallucinating that the ruling party would go beyond 2021 when most of the general citizenry were grappling with survival.
“There is a lot of suffering that has never been witnessed in our lives as Zambian citizens. Mr Evans should not judge us by our political ideology, but he should instead get to terms with the fact that we have a lot of connections with the grassroots,” said Mr Mwiinde.
Mr Evans is quoted in today’s Mast newspapers insinuating that the UPND would have to wait for 2031 or 2041 before it could ascend to power.
He stated that Mr Evans’ sentiments amounted to fooling Zambians, whom he said were bearing the blunt of the economic malaise that the country finds itself in due to the PF’s poor leadership and bad policies.
“There are so many problems that are heaped on the Zambian people and it is them who are feeling the pain. That is why they are calling for change of leadership,” he said.
Mr Evans alleged that the “wait” is owing to massive development that Mr Lungu has brought to the country since ascending to power in 2015, sentiments that Mr Mwiinde said were typical of every PF bootlicker who had lost touch with the reality on the ground.
