Kitwe (01.07.2020) – UPND wishes to express disappointment at the manner in which the Republican Vice President, Inonge Wina chose to lie over the acquisition of National Registration Cards (NRCs) during the Vice President Question and Answer Session in Parliament, last Friday.
We have noted with concern reports of PF cadres ferrying citizens in especially perceived PF strongholds to NRC centres unsuspecting Zambians to NRC acquisition centres in complete defiance of COVID 19 health guidelines and regulations.
As a constitutional requirement in which every Zambian is supposed to be given a chance to acquire an NRC without political influence, we expected Mrs Wina to condemn the trend where people from Western, Southern, and North-Western provinces are being issued with receipts and asked to go back for their NRCs after a month.
It is unfortunate that Vice President opted to trivialise the issuance of NRCs as a non-essential and important matter knowing very well that it is every citizen’s right to identify as enshrined in the Republican constitution and it is her Government’s responsibility to ensure that Zambians of age regardless of ethnicity, religion, region or race is provided for with the national identity as a legal requirement.
The media is rife with reports of some District Commissioners in Luapula and Northern provinces moving around with National Registration officers into villages with the sole purpose of giving out the identity cards when the same cannot be said of Southern, Western, North western and Central provinces where an average of 20 cards are given per day.
We as the UPND wishes to advice Madam Mutukwa Wina to be sincere in her dealings as a mother and perceived role model to some women political aspirants and not to engage into public lies.
All Zambians of age across the country need Registration cards and it is the responsibility of Madam Wina and her government to ensure that the documents are given indiscriminately.
We are watching you with keen eyes and we therefore want to advice our youths and general membership across the country to be on a lookout for any suspicious activities.
