United Party for National Development (UPND) deputy Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has challenged President Edgar Lungu to fire corrupt accused Minister of Health, Dr Chitalu Chilufya in order to pave way for prosecution.
Addressing Journalists at the UPND secretariat this afternoon, Mr Mweetwa stated that Mr Lungu had continued to send a signal and posture of assurance to his erring Ministers by allowing them to continue serving in their portfolios even when they were facing numerous charges.
He stated that if Lungu was committed to the fight against all forms of graft against his senior rank and file, he should have swiftly moved in to fire Dr Chilufya.
“Mr Lungu assured the nation during the State of the Nation Address recently that there would be no sacred cows in the fight against corruption. After firing Social Services Minister, Emerine Kabanshi, it should not have taken us to remind him to fire Dr Chilufya. This is in line with the Constitutional requirement of impartiality and fair application of the law pursuant to Article 8 (a), (c), (d) and (e) of the Constitution,” he said.
He stated that it was disheartening that those who stood to speak up against the numerous ills of society were being arrested without police bond while the elite such as Dr Chilufya were being bonded in their own cognizance.
He stated that it was surprising that Mr Lungu had opted to ignore his promise to uphold the rule of law during the State of the nation in which he promised to respect national values, principles, morality and integrity.
He has since called for a return to the rule of law so that institutions of governance could return to operating normally and autonomously.
“We want the country to return back to the rule of law so that institutions such as the ACC could revert to operating normally and autonomously,” he said.
