*…as Alliance partners warn of full-scale and widespread chaos; demonstrations should HH be harmed*
Lusaka-The UPND Alliance has called on Zambians to prepare for widespread demonstrations should this morning’s assassination attempt on Alliance Presidential candidate, President Hakainde Hichilema by Zambia Police in Chingola culminate into any physical harm on Mr Hichilema.
The UPND alliance feels that such unprofessional acts by police are desperate attempts to discredit Mr Hichilema’s chances of winning the August 12 polls.
Heavily armed Paramilitary Police this morning besieged and fired both live and rubber bullets at President Hichilema’s vehicle in an attempt to assassinate him.
Mr Hichilema is on the Copperbelt conducting roadshows in the area ahead of the 12th August general elections.
The alliance says while President Lungu is campaigning country wide, he wants to silence his opponents using the police.
And UPND Alliance members consisting of MDC leader, Felix Mutati, ADD’s leader, Charles Milupi, and Alliance running mate, Mutale Nalumango told the Press in Lusaka at the MDC Secretariat that the they won’t sit idle and watch as PF leader, Edgar Chagwa Lungu continue to toy around the Mr Hichilema’s life.
UPND Alliance running mate and UPND Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, who described the attempts by Police to unlawfully terminate the life of Mr Hichilema in Chiwempala, Chingola on the Copper Belt on his way to church, described today’s events as a dark day for Zambia.
“Today is a very bad day for our nation…for Zambia. We are aware that the PF is very desperate and they are doing every thing possible to either stop the election or rig. We refuse to allow President Edgar Lungu to do a coupe d’état on our Constitution,” she said.
Ms Nalumango also accused Mr Lungu of riding on the novel coronavirus to bar his political opponents from freely campaigning.
“Edgar Chagwa Lungu wants to make Covid-19 a weapon. There is no way a President can announce the ban of a rally at his own rally. We will stand on the side of the Constitution. We ask all Zambians to stand together and not allow anyone to destroy or mutilate the Constitution,” said Nalumango.
“We challenge you, Kanganja to come and arrest us. We can’t seat and watch while Lungu continues to rape the Constitution,” she said.
And MDC leader, Felix Mutati, also echoed Ms Nalumango’s sentiments.
UPND Alliance Chairperson, Charles Milupi recounted that heavily armed, overzealous Police officers working on strict instructions from Mr Lungu discharged live ammunition and teargas canisters on his way to church this morning.
“We have a report that Police today discharged teargas canisters, live and rubber bullets where President Hichilema was seated as he was on his way to Chiwempala where he was scheduled to visit two churches. We know that since Mr Stephen Kampyongo is no longer executing his duties as Home Affairs Minister, every instruction to the Police is from none other than President Lungu and Inspector General of Police, Kakoma Kanganja.
Mr Milupi charged that should Mr Lungu continue to threaten the life of Mr Hichilema, the UPND Alliance would be left with no option but to call for widespread demonstrations across the country.
“What happened in Chiwempala in Chingola (CB) is clearly an assassination attempt. For some time now, the PF has played HH like a toy. Maybe it is because we, Zambians have conducted ourselves in a peaceful manner. Let me send this warning that any harm that would be done on Mr Hichilema won’t be allowed this time around,” said Milupi.
UPND Secretary General, Baruke Imenda, Chairperson for Legal, Jack Mwiimbu, Special Advisor to President Hakainde Hichilema, Douglas Syakalima, Chairperson for Industrial relations, Amb. Bernard Mpundu and Lusaka Province Chaiperson, Obvious Mwaliteta also attended the briefing.
